In a statement yesterday from the CDC he said when people think of waterborne diseases, they usually think of simple diarrhea that is bothersome, but quickly resolves. “However, these infections can cause severe illness that often results in hospital stays of more than a week, which can quickly drive up healthcare costs,” he said. Cryptosporidiosis is caused by a parasite containing an outer shell that can resist chlorine disinfectants. It typically spreads through contaminated drinking or recreational water. The main symptom is watery diarrhea that can last as long as 2 weeks. Giardiasis, also known as “backpacker’s disease,” is also caused by a parasite that can contaminate soil or water, according to the CDC. Symptoms include diarrhea and other intestinal problems that can last from 2 to 6 weeks. Michael Beach, PhD, an epidemiologist with the CDC’s National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases and senior author of the study, said that the study is useful as a baseline for measuring the effect of future waterborne disease prevention interventions. CDC cryptosporidiosis background information Legionnaires’ disease, caused by Legionella bacteria, is a type of pneumonia that infects about 8,000 to 18,000 people each year, according to background information from the CDC. Infections are fatal in 5% to 30% of patients. The bacteria can grow in warm water sources such as air conditioning systems or hot tubs. People typically contract the disease by breathing in vapor or mist from contaminated water sources. Older people and those with underlying lung conditions are most vulnerable to the disease. Cost estimates for individual diseases were: CDC Legionnaires’ disease background information Legionnaires’ disease, $101 million to $321 million For each disease, researchers calculated the cost paid by the insurer, the patient’s out-of-pocket expenses, and the total amount paid. Total estimated cost ranged from $154 million to $539 million, which included $44 million to $147 million in payments for Medicare and Medicaid. Inpatient hospitalization costs were highest for Legionnaires’ disease, averaging $34, 000 per patient and lowest for giardiasis, which totaled about $9,000. Inpatient costs for cryptosporidiosis averaged $21,000. Modest disease prevention investments such as public health education campaigns, appropriate inspection of building water systems, and appropriate maintenance of pools and other recreational water facilities could drive down disease rates and lead to significant healthcare cost savings, Beach said. Giardiasis, $16 million to $63 million Jul 14 CDC press release See also: The study, presented yesterday at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Atlanta, is the first to assess the total healthcare costs of all waterborne diseases in the United States, the authors said. Using a large insurance claims database, they gauged the hospitalization costs of three common waterborne illnesses in the United States: Legionnaires’ disease, cryptosporidiosis, and giardiasis. Jul 15, 2010 ATLANTA (CIDRAP News) A new report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) puts the yearly waterborne illness burden at as much as $539 million. In response to Mr Moore’s letter ‘What is the point?’ I am sorry he sees little point in his job as a solicitor – I love mine and see a great deal of point to it. I am not motivated however, to work in an ivory tower of the ‘only profession’ that could convey property or write a will. As he says, there are years of study required and a ‘struggle’ to get the coveted training contract. Law is a profession, and this process is necessary to ensure only those that make the grade get through. It’s the same with every other respected profession – or seven years of study for medicine and architecture. Nothing good comes easily. As an environmental lawyer I love my work: it stimulates and interests me; is constantly varied; and I enjoy helping clients to understand environmental legislation. I work with an excellent team of people in an outgoing, forward-thinking law firm. I am constantly challenged to learn new aspects of both law and the environmental industry. I take satisfaction from the fact that clients do still require my expertise Mr Moore says law is one of the most stressful jobs with the longest working hours. Yes, a few times I have had to work until 11pm on witness statements, been a bit tired and not got home for dinner on time. But my job isn’t as stressful as that of a friend of mine, a doctor, who physically collapsed with exhaustion after 36 hours on a ward. Mr Moore also fails to mention that law is one of the most well paid professions. I am sorry Mr Moore values being a solicitor by whether you can get £4.35 for swearing an affidavit or not. Personally, I value my job as a solicitor by the work I do, the clients I have and the colleagues with whom I work. Maybe this answers his question? Dr Anna Willetts, Greenwoods, Peterborough

Payne will look to raise the bar when the SFA pole vault crew joins the rest of the track and field squad at the Howie Ryan Invitational this weekend in Houston. The two-day meet is set to begin on Friday at 10:00 a.m. while Payne will be in action starting at 3:00 p.m. One week after posting the best women’s indoor pole vault mark in NCAA history, Payne demolished her own record not once, but twice, on Saturday afternoon at the University of New Mexico Lobo Collegiate Open. She surpassed 4.65m (15-3) on her first attempt and then cleared 4.75m (15-7) on her first run before hanging it up for the day. Payne’s impressive performance in the Albuquerque Convention Center puts her tied for No. 3 on the all-time U.S. women’s indoor performers list and tied for 11th on the all-time world performers list. No other American woman has ever jumped higher in the month of January. At five different heights, Payne didn’t miss a single time as she left the rest of the 31-woman field in the dust. She won the event by more than a foot for her second consecutive individual crown of the 2015 indoor season. The New Braunfels native has been the top collegiate performer in all three of her meets this year. NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the second week in a row, Stephen F. Austin’s Demi Payne has been named the Division I Women’s National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced on Tuesday morning. Payne, who broke the NCAA record with a 4.63m (15-2.25) leap on Jan. 17 at the Texas A&M Team Invitational, now owns the top three jumps all-time in the NCAA (15-2.25, 15-3, 15-7).

Good effort trying to be objective in this article. I would like to give a constructive feedback which could help in clearing things up.1. It is mentioned that planting trees in village common lands will have negative affects socially and ecologically. There is no need to even have to agree or disagree with it, because, you also mentioned the fact that Cauvery Calling aims to plant trees only in the private lands of the farmers. So, plantation in the common lands doesn’t come into the picture.2.I don’t see that the ecologists are totally against this project, but just they they have some concerns, mainly in terms of what species of trees will be planted. And because there was no direct communication between the ecologists and Isha Foundation, it was not possible for them to address the concerns. As you seem to have spoken with an Isha spokesperson, if you could connect the concerned parties, it would be great, because I see that the ecologists are genuinely interested in making sure things are done the right way.May we all come together and make things happen.Rare Amazon bush dogs caught on camera in BoliviaCarrot1 Feba very good iniciative to be fallowed by the ranchers all overSponsored In a briefing paper released March 14, Global Witness accused ten companies from the EU of importing timber harvested illegally from the DRC.Industrie Forestiere du Congo (IFCO) logged outside of its approved operational area in a remote DRC forest, the watchdog group said.According to Global Witness, the IFCO acquired the concession from company owners or shareholders whose identities have not yet been confirmed. Ten European companies have been accused of importing illegally-harvested timber from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by Global Witness. The watchdog group said earlier this month that the timber was brought to market by a company called Industrie Forestiere du Congo (IFCO), which operates in a densely-forested, remote area of the central African country.“[The report] shows that certain companies based in the EU are probably not doing adequate due diligence to screen out any potentially illegal timber from their supply chains,” said Colin Robertson, a campaigner with Global Witness. “Secondly it points to a weak enforcement in some EU member states of the [European Union Timber Regulation].”The report provides satellite and other evidence that suggests IFCO harvested timber outside the boundaries of the area it was approved to operate in, which “directly contravenes DRC forest law and the company’s own management plan.”In addition, the report cites a letter written by Congolese authorities in Tshuapa province, where IFCO’s concession lies, ordering the company to suspend its operations for more than six months in 2018. According to evidence presented by Global Witness, IFCO did not comply with the order, and logs harvested during that period may have wound up in EU markets.IFCO is a major player in the DRC’s timber industry, with clients in countries across the EU, including France, Spain, and Italy. Between June and October 2018, the company brought logs into the EU that had a market value of around 2 million euros. According to Robertson, that timber was an expensive good that may have been used to make high-end furniture or flooring.“It’s very much a luxury product, and it retails for very high prices,” he said. The rainforest in the DRC. Image via Flickr.IFCO controls two concessions in the DRC, including one that the report lists as an area the size of Luxembourg. The company has only owned the concession since early 2018, when it was acquired from another logging company called Cotrefor, which was previously called Trans-M. According to the report, the largest shareholder in Trans-M was a Lebanese businessman named Ahmed Tajideen. Three members of Tajideen’s family have previously been placed on a terrorism sanctions list by the U.S. Treasury, due to alleged links to the Hezbollah militia group. The report describes how after Trans-M changed its name to Cotrefor, a representative of the company denied ongoing links to Tajideen. However, most of the Trans-M staff remained, and many are now employed by IFCO.“We don’t know who the owners or shareholders of IFCO are,” Robertson said, adding that EU buyers of the company’s timber should ask it to disclose that information. The report also alleges that IFCO has not been following sustainability principles that should mark areas that were logged within the past 25 years as off-limits, which would give them a chance to regenerate. While not technically a violation of DRC laws, the failure to adhere to the company’s management plan is an indication that its operations are potentially more environmentally harmful than it has led buyers to believe.Rainforest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Photo courtesy of A.P.E.S. database“The Congo Basin is one of the most climate critical forest on earth,” Robertson said. “It’s the second-largest rainforest, it’s home to incredible biodiversity, and it supports the livelihoods of millions of people. It’s also one of the most remote places on earth where sometimes governance or oversight of the behavior of companies is weak.”The report calls on companies in the EU to cease purchasing timber from IFCO until they can verify that its operations are in compliance with the EU Timber Regulation. In addition, it urges the government of the DRC to investigate any illegal harvesting of logs by IFCO outside of its agreed-upon boundaries, and to sanction the company if it is found to have violated its management plan. While IFCO itself hasn’t responded publicly to the report, on March 21 the company published a statement in French from the Congo-based Federation of Wood Manufacturers on its website. It called the allegations “defamatory.” The statement denied that logs were harvested from off-limits areas and asserted that IFCO and Cotrefor are “distinct entities.”Banner image: The landscape of Garamba National Park in DRC. Monsanto, with offices in Research Triangle Park outside Raleigh, may be acquired by the German pharmaceutical and chemical company Bayer. The company is known for aspirins, but it also is a key manufacturer of seeds and pesticides. This impacts North Carolina farmers who depend on vegetable seeds.According to Roger Johnson, president of the National Farmers Union, the $6.25-billion deal will consolidate control of more than a quarter of the world’s seed and pesticides market.“This extreme consolidation drives up costs for farmers and it limits their choice of products in the marketplace,” he says. “It also reduces the incentive for the remaining agricultural input giants to compete and to innovate through research and development.”Bayer CEO Werner Baumann says his company wants to help farmers grow more nutritious food in a more sustainable way. The Farmers Union, which advocates on behalf of 200,000 farmers and farm communities nationwide, has pledged to ensure that Bayer keeps its word. The Department of Justice spent months reviewing the proposed merger and determined that it would limit competition, but gave it conditional approval anyway if it spins off $9 billion in assets. This includes the sale of Bayer’s digital farming, seed and herbicide businesses.Johnson says divestment is an approach the Trump administration is taking in lieu of imposing regulations that would be subject to regular review.“While we appreciate the significant divestitures agreed to as a part of this approval, the Farmers Union condemns DOJ’s continued rubber-stamping of mergers in the food and agriculture arena,” he notes.Critics say this merger shows that our monopoly laws are worthless, and a recent poll shows that 94 percent of farmers are concerned about the merger.
Items to AvoidHoliday Ham Shanks with Brown Sugar-Pineapple Glaze – Favorite Things – $8.00This year I only experienced one item that I wouldn’t recommend, and while it’s mostly because of the high price and small serving size, I wasn’t a big fan of the taste. The glaze that they used was a bit too sweet and syrupy, which is a bummer because I’m usually a big fan of pineapples. There’s other food items available at Festival of Holidays that didn’t make the cut for this post. But hopefully this will help you find some treats to enjoy. Be sure to check out our Disneyland Crowd Calendar to see the best dates to visit the parks this holiday season. Let me know about your favorite Festival of Holidays items in the comments below. Nashville Fried Hot Turkey – Spicy Celebrations – $7.50A returning favorite from 2017. Last year I said that turkey has no right to be this good, and I still stand by that statement. It’s like a spicy chicken sandwich from Chic-fil-A, but instead of chicken, it’s turkey. Taste-wise, it’s fantastic. The best part is that after you’re done with the turkey you get to eat the piece of bread that all the juice and sauce soaked in. Share This!I hope you spent the last year stretching out your stomach because there’s a lot of wonderful new items to try at this year’s Festival of Holidays at Disney California Adventure. Some tasty items are returning from previous years as well. No more wasting time, let’s get into the best food items at Disney California Adventure’s Festival of Holidays 2018.The Best of the BestTurkey & Stuffing Tamale with Cranberry Relish – Merry Mashups – $7.75Tamales are one of my favorite food items. I’ve probably had thousands of them in my 35 years on this earth, and surprisingly this was up there in terms of taste. It was like a Thanksgiving dinner, but in a tamale. The turkey was perfectly cooked, the sauce on top was not too thick or rich, and the tamale itself was just right (not dry at all). I’ll just get this out of the way now, the price is high. Entrees are even more expensive than last year. Thankfully the serving sizes on most items is bigger than in previous years. Anyway, besides the price this is one of the best items available at Festival of Holidays 2018. “Hot Cocoa” Marshmallow Macaron – Merry Mashups – $5.50Another winner from the Merry Mashups booth. First of all, take a look at the presentation on this thing. I really like that it looks like a campfire. Second, the taste is very very good. It really does taste like a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows. This item is very sweet, which may turn some people off. Those people are crazy. Thank them for not wanting any of your precious macaron and eat it all on your own. Chorizo Queso Fundido – with house-made tortilla chips – Brews & Bites – $6.25Chorizo is sinfully good. Thankfully, calories don’t count when you’re in a Disney theme park. Yes, these are pretty much fancy nachos. But hey, they’re delicious. Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce – Visions of Sugarplums – $4.75The toffee pudding has been a staple of DCA’s Festival of Holidays since the event started a few years ago. Again, it does not disappoint. I actually had to reuse a picture of the dish from last year because I was so excited to eat it that I forgot to take a current picture. It’s that good. The Really Good StuffLox & Everything Bagel Nachos – Merry Mashups – $7.50Check out the generous helping of salmon on top of of those bagel nachos. Good stuff. It’s worth mentioning that the Lox & Everything Bagel Nachos, along with many of the other items available at Festival of the Holidays, are made with fresh ingredients, which makes these dishes very good and it takes the sting out of the high prices. Also, this is another great item from the Merry Mashups booth. That booth was definitely a winner this year. Vanilla and Cranberry Trifle – Winter Wonders – $5.00I found this item to be light, smooth, and refreshing. None of the tastes overpower each other. Also, I’m embarrassed to say that every year at Festival of Holidays there is at least one item that is named something that I don’t know what it is. This year is “trifle.” I whipped out my handy dictionary to find that a trifle is “a thing of little value or importance.” Knowing that was something different, I quickly moved my eyes down to see that a trifle is also “a cold dessert of sponge cake and fruit covered with layers of custard, jelly, and cream.” I can easily say this is the best trifle I’ve ever had. It’s also the only trifle I’ve ever had. Chana Masala with Grilled Garlic Naan – Winter Wonders – $6.75Looks are deceiving with this dish. It appears to be a basic soup, but it’s actually a complex mix of garlic, chickpeas, tomatoes, and more. The grilled naan was warm and tasty. This is a dish that is easy to overlook but it deserves a try. Cornbread Cakes with Braised Collard Greens and Smoked Bacon Gravy – Blissfully Braised – $7.00I’m not a big fan of bacon or gravy but the cornbread cakes in this dish quickly won me over. The cornbread is on the savory side thanks to the collard greens. After eating this I made a note took look up a recipe because the taste of it was excellent.
