Spurrier Forced to Put Out Recruiting Fires

first_imgCOLUMBIA – South Carolina officially began workouts in preparation for the Duck Commander Independence Bowl Monday. But, following a regular season in which the Gamecocks opened ranked in the top 10 nationally only to limp to the finish line with a 6-6 record, their performance in a minor bowl game is not the biggest topic of discussion surrounding the football program.Since USC’s 35-17 loss to Clemson Steve Spurrier, who is 69 years old, has not only appeared to be re-engaged as the Gamecocks football coach, but has been working hard to turn the team’s fortunes around. One comment by The Head Ball Coach, however, has sent many posters on Gamecock Nation web and social media sites and some USC recruits into a tizzy. After hedging his bets during the second half of the season, Spurrier announced he was returning as the Gamecocks’ coach, but planned to keep that title for at least two-to-three years. Many have proclaimed that statement as the undoing of Spurrier’s tenure at USC. Several recruits have admitted the possibility of him not being around when they graduate is concerning.“I just don’t know who is going to be coaching there in two to three years,” said Louisiana lineman Jozie Milton to the BigSpur.com when explaining his Saturday flip from the Gamecocks to TCU. “If I redshirt, I would not even be playing for this staff.”The team has had four players in the 2015 signing class de-commit, although only one has specifically said it was due to a fear of Spurrier not being around for at least another four years.Although it will not be fully known until signing day, Spurrier and USC assistant coaches appear to have calmed the waters among a few key recruits they have visited. There are several that are considering opting out which will keep the coaching staff on its toes until signing day. The class, once ranked second nationally, is still solid at eighth but can’t afford many more defections. An even bigger Spurrier faux pas, according to many, was the failure to pursue former Florida coach Will Muschamp with more vigor to become the Gamecocks’ defensive coordinator. When Muschamp opted to become Auburn’s defensive coordinator and announced it was his only job offer, many USC football fans were again incensed. While there appears to be a good chance changes will be made within USC’s coaching staff following the team’s appearance in the Duck Commander Independence Bowl on Dec. 27, many South Carolina football faithful believe Spurrier should have cleaned house immediately following the Clemson game. Some Internet and social media posters have gone so far as to suggest it is time for the most successful coach in Gamecocks football history to retire. Thanks for making USC relevant in football for the first extended period in its history and defeating an instate rival that has dominated the Gamecocks throughout the years five straight times. Now it is time to move back to Florida to walk along the beaches and play golf and hand the program to someone who can take it to even more impressive heights.Who that person is, however, no one seems to know.Spurrier has said, since becoming the Gamecocks’ coach that when things went bad he wouldn’t have to be asked to leave, he would do it without provocation. It is hard to believe someone as competitive as he would walk away from the program without doing everything in his power to rebound from a disappointing season. If he was to step down, however, those who called for it might discover finding a suitable replacement a difficult task.A look at the problems a storied program like Michigan has faced finding a coach after firing Brady Hoke is an example. The Wolverines had lofty expectations of making a hire of a well-known and highly regarded coach. That has yet to happen, however.San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and LSU’s Les Miles appear to have no interest in the position, which has forced the school to begin working on its “plan B” list.Even Florida, a program with much more tradition than South Carolina, based in a state with a pool of hundreds of talented high school football players to draw from, was unable to make the “splash” hire many expected; although Jim McElwain is considered a solid coach. The Gators original list – at least early speculation – had Chip Kelly, Bob Stoops and Dan Mullen on it.While the thought was Muschamp could be lured to Columbia to become the Gamecocks’ defensive coordinator by also offering the title of “Head Coach in Waiting,” there is no way of knowing whether or not he would be successful running an SEC program the second time around. As Spurrier prepares USC for its postseason tilt against Miami, fans will just have to sit tight to see what changes, if any, Spurrier has in store.last_img read more
